Instructions Overview

What’s required of you

These instructions assume you have a cursory understanding of WordPress, although we offer some basic info and links. If you are not already familiar, in addition to this site, get over to the WordPress Documentation and start exploring! It’s really good and it’s how we all learned. It just takes time to actually read it. You can do it!

Learning WordPress

Beyond the free WordPress Codex and official documentation mentioned above, there are several commercial options:

  • Digging Into WordPress is a beautifully designed 400 page PDF and/or Print book which goes into far more detail than we can on this site. A great supplement for everyone from beginners to experienced site builders. Highly recommendedClick here to visit Sales @ Digging Into WordPress.
  • Lynda.com video tutorials cover setting up a Self-Hosted WordPress site. The videos walk you through WordPress step by step in manageable chunks that allow you to go at your own pace. And signing up allows you access to tutorials about whatever you want to learn including CSS, PHP, Photoshop, and more.

Another very helpful thing is a “spirit of playful cleverness”1 and exploration. Be determined to learn, realize you will come against some obstacles, but you can overcome them. The WordPress community is very supportive. And speaking of support, there are some tips on support on this site.

And last, realize you do not have to do this all! You can always hire someone. It can still be very affordable to pay someone to set up your site and then you can keep it updated, or you can set it up and pay someone a designer a small fee to make small changes to the design.

Last, break this project into manageable chunks. You don’t have to get all the work you ever made online by next week. Start with three projects, then build from there.

Now, let’s get to the instructions for WPFolio!
