Creating Pages

Start by reading about Pages in the WordPress documentation.

You will probably create several Pages. Consider creating a page for your

  • CV or Resume (WPFolio uses special formatting for your CV or Resume)
  • Bio
  • Artist Statement
  • Contact Information

or any other information about you, your work, or your site that is not connected to a specific moment in time.

  • You will probably want to avoid adding galleries to a page, but a few images can make pages more fun to look at.
  • keep in mind images on pages look best at 630px wide. You can do 900px wide images on a page if you apply the class “.widemargins-override” (see image below)

adding the widemargins-override class to an image

Formatting for Resume/CV Page

If you can follow these conventions, your Resume or CV will come out looking sharp. If you understand HTML:

  • headers are H2
  • Years are an unordered list
  • events are nested unordered lists

And it should look something like this in HTML view:

If you don’t understand HTML

Select the HTML editor (instead of the visual editor) and copy the above code in. Experiment with it and preview your changes. The syntax is very particular, so be sure you follow along closely.

Hi Steve – THANK YOU for an EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL theme… I’ve been looking for months (true) and WPFolio is IT for my friend’s PhotoBlog!

But we’re having difficulties despite being ultra comfortable with WP, CSS & HTML, smushing JS & php blocks around, running 4 other blogs and game for anything (except coding php etc. ).

    I’m running WP 3.0.1 + WPFolio 1.6.3 + Child Theme (in ../Themes) + adjusted CSS to “@ import url(‘../slambert-wpfolio-374ec82/style.css’); ” Yet a few problems.

When you say, “You can do 900px wide images on a page if you apply the class “.widemargins-override”

Q-1 : where/how do we apply the CSS? (I can see it in the main styles.css – it appears to be on)

I ‘think’ the 900px images I’m using are damaging the centred .post-bottom-title DIV details which appear somewhat left of centre – BUT ONLY on the front page. On post pages it centres fine!

I have the child-theme running smoothly with relative directory internal links updated , menu running OK with pages created and a Contact form working just right BUT – I’ve tried every which way to get all relevant thumbnails to run in category pages – no success.

Your work on JULIA’s site is the glowing reference point for us! So we wanna be as good as hers!

Q : 2 – Why do category pages become single date with only 1 thumbnail showing per page / post?
Shouldn’t they show all post thumbnails? I can find (after 5 days!) no reference to it being otherwise.

Q : 3 – are nested menus meant to emanate from (previously set-up) nested categories?

And “Yes” I’ve read ALL pages + WP instructions and know them well 8-).
Your help / advice / instruction is welcomed!

    Regards — Howard

This is the kind of question I like to see! Thanks for all the info.

Re #1 – you can add a css class to the image when you insert it into the post under advanced settings. I added a new image to this set of instruction that should shed some light on it.

#2 – yes, they should show all the posts and post thumbnails for that category. Yours isn’t showing up because it’s only showing 1 post. Set it to show 12 or something and you’ll get a grid. (thats’ under settings > reading)

#3 – not sure exactly what you mean, but the menus you can change around however you like if you use this and there’s plenty of documentation around for it. We’re just tapping into that part of the wordpress code so there’s nothing really special about it.

If you want an account for the wiki to write a tutorial let me know.

        Hi Steve

BADABING… all good here. Thanks for your help! Perfect answers for me. Great result.
By accident I simultaneously had the static front-page how-to open alongside your advice, applied it in seconds and REALLY happy with that final result. Kharma’s a wonderful thing…

It removed the ‘problem’ of how to NOT have a page full of posts – although on another site for my son that’s exactly what was needed, so I may be switching to WPF 8-) and letting them flow.

On #3 – I made a ‘traditional catch-all top category’ of IMAGES similar to WP default ‘uncategorised’ and used that as the menu top link with sub-categories as cascaded menu sub-links which works perfectly – so answered my own question!

That way it’s simpler, and user-expected, to click on top category to get those ‘immediate’ results. The audience will figure there is finer sorting into sub-groups simply by seeing the drop down items.

The child theme works easy and simple in making adjustment to a couple of font colours. So I can’t ask for more.

I should be finished with the construction by Friday 19. So yeah after that I love to be able to give back for the creation and use of WPF with a tutorial which I hope should add a little user experience and perspective to the process. So, happy to get the account. Contact details are as given.

Thanks again Steve! A great, gorgeous creatives theme and support!

Oh yes – I am happy to contribute experiential instructions, which may help others, when we get finished.

wp 3.0.3 wpfolio 1.6.5b1 — using child theme

I am wondering if anything has changed to break the image override in newer versions of the theme.

I’ve been unable to get this wide image override to work, though it is exactly what I want to do. Even with my image at 630px wide it is slightly off-center to the right. If I make the image any larger it extends to the right beyond the edge of the page. If I make the image around 600 px, it starts to center ok.

The img tag seems to be updating correctly:
    <img class="size-full wp-image-82 widemargins-override" . . .

I am simply not getting any effect.

Also, changing the image alignment seems to change the bottom margin of the page for some reason — centered gives me a large margin, left aligned very little margin.

You are using an older version of PHP that is unsupported by WordPress – contact your hosting service about updating to the latest version. In the meantime, check this thread and please test the function in the last comment – we are unable to replicate the issue, so if it works for you we can include it in the next update.

    Hello,
Thank you very much for sharing your theme. I am setting up a website mainly for showing photographs of my painting and i like the very neat look of you theme so I decided to use it. I’ve been reading tutorial on wordpress, the read me file of your them and i googles my questions many times but I’m still having 2 difficulties so I am asking for your light. I’m sorry I am not a techie at all and can’t understand scripts so I’m using the dashboard mainly (and I’m french so I may have misunderstood some explanations…)
1/ I created pages to have what look like tabs at the top of the page. I can’t manage to modify the order of these tabs (i thought I could for example drag and drop the pages but these are not widgets you can grab in the all pages page of the dashboard) how can I do that? Was i not supposed to create pages to get these tabs and organise my content in there?
2/ I have inserted a gallery on one page which will show the pix of my painting. and I can’t manage through the modify gallery button to add / remove pictures to the gallery from the library of content that I have uploaded. am I missing a functionality of is it just not possible. I installed the jquery lightbox as advised, am I supposed to add another plugin to be able to do that?

sorry again for the question and limited english… hope you can help
    thanks in advance

      Hi Amelie -

      1. To move around menu items, you’ll need to make a custom WordPress menu. You can find this under Appearance -> Menus. Read more about that here.

      2. WordPress is pretty annoying about working with the Gallery and Media Library together. Unfortunately, I think the easiest way to get around this is to re-upload your images to the specific page or post. I might be missing something, but as far as I know there isn’t a way to add images from the Media Library to post/page galleries.

        Hi
        thank you for replying!
        1. so the tabs that we see in the demo of the WPfolio is not something that we have by default when using the theme? (I’m sorry to insist it’s just to make sure that i did not miss using something right). if not then I’ll see how to attach the pages to a menu as you suggest

        2. i finally found a trick that I’d like to post in case someone has the same kind of issue. I uploaded all the picture of my paintings in the library and when I want to add them in a gallery on a specific page I just need to type in the html file below the gallery tag include and list the pictures id of the photo i want to include on that page. This way you do not need to re upload the pictures everytime you need to update your gallery.

        thank you for your support!

          1. Yep, that’s right. They were created/ordered with a custom menu.

          2. Excellent trick! I have trouble with that myself all the time and haven’t yet found a workaround. I’ll write a post about that for the blog this weekend and will be sure to credit you – thanks a bunch :)

My pages will only come out on the site in alphabetical order and I tried to do them by date but it is not working. I am new to this and even though I have some understandin on how to read code I do not know anything about changing it. I love the format though. Can you please help? I just want my pages to read in a certian order on my homepage.

Read the wordpress codex on how to change the order of pages. You can also change the order by creating a custom menu. Your questions have more to do with how wordpress works than this theme in particular…
